President Pete's Paragraph

We are pleased to advise that the Club has engaged Craig Parry to create a Master Plan for our golf course. Craig has recently commenced work, which has had our entire golf course surveyed along with several onsite visits, understanding how the 27 holes play. Some key areas as part of Craig's brief include introducing a bunker replacement program, a green replacement program, identifying labour & maintenance saving initiatives and continual improvement of playing surfaces. Creating the Master plan will take approximately 3-4 months, and when complete, we will invite members for a detailed information session with Craig.

Toro Machinery Fleet

This week, we have finalised our golf course machinery fleet acquisition with delivery expected to commence from the 28th April. This new fleet is on an operating lease for a 5-year term. This new fleet is essential for the grounds staff to complete their work across the site. In securing the new machines, members should also know that pricing has increased by almost 40% since the last fleet. This, in monetary value, is circa an extra $125k per year.

Golf Shop Renovation

The final details of our upcoming Golf Shop Renovation are now being completed. Building and renovation works will commence in mid-May and are expected to be completed before opening in mid-July. The major work will include the removal of internal walls, replacing fixtures and fittings throughout the entire Golf Shop, improving merchandising and F&B facilities for members and guests and creating a productive traffic flow in and out of the Golf Shop. Once complete, the operational benefits members and guests will notice include:

  • An expanded and more functional layout to support daily operations and create a more enjoyable member experience.
  • Improved storage and dedicated staff facilities to enhance efficiency and working conditions.
  • A redesigned entry and internal flow to ease congestion and provide a more welcoming arrival experience
  • Modern fittings, furniture, and displays that align with the high standard set in the Clubhouse.
  • Better ventilation and air conditioning for a more comfortable environment for both staff and members.
  • Upgraded repair and fitting facilities to deliver a more professional and efficient service.

In the coming weeks, we will have a display area in the club of the Golf Shop renovation for all members to view. The Men's and Ladies' Changerooms will be inaccessible during the renovation period.

The new floor plan shows an expanded and more functional layout.

Temporary Pro Shop & Locker Room Facilities

During the renovation period of the Golf Shop, our Professional Staff will operate from a temporary Golf Shop located immediately on the right as you enter the golf area (similar to when Maurie & Maria Moses left). Whilst the floor area will be noticeably smaller, our offerings and service will remain the same. In the coming weeks, we will be actively reducing our stock levels, but we also would like to remind members that customer orders can still be easily facilitated. Members with lockers will need to remove their belongings before the mid-May commencement. Bathroom access for this period will be provided in the Clubhouse function bathrooms via the lift.

General Manager Update

In recent weeks, the gate to the Cart Sheds has been left open on several occasions. After the break-ins earlier this year, it is disappointing to find that members with cart storage are still leaving this open. Members with golf cart storage are reminded that it is their responsibility to lock the gate when leaving.

Golf Course Update

Greens Update

Our greens are in good health, and we believe they have come through summer far stronger than in previous years. The image below is a plug taken from the Putting Green. The white roots are from the bent turf, which now appear to be 5-6cm long. In previous years, these roots would only be 2-3cm at the end of summer. We believe this is a result of introducing different amendments to the soil profile, regular renovations of the turf, new nematicide applications, and the use of our nano bubble watering system.

Greens - removal of couch

Members who have recently played will notice the 'yellowing' or 'bleaching' appearance of our greens. This is a result of a herbicide application that reduces the growth of couch (and other summer grasses), but the bent grass continues to grow. We expect this to continue for another 3-5 weeks until the couch goes into winter dormancy.

Greens Nursery

The area on the right-hand side of the 11th tee has now been treated for weeds and foreign grasses. It will now be levelled and oversown with bent grass. Once complete, this nursery will also be able to be used by members as a chipping/practice green. We will communicate when it is ready.

Cart path on 7th and 8th

Our next major project through winter is to rebuild the cart paths around the 7th green and 8th tee. This will include rerouting the path to the right-hand side of the 7th green and around the green, linking up to the 8th tee.

Tree Pruning and Stump Removal

During May, a significant program will commence to remove several tree stumps throughout the entire course. We estimate there are over 200 stumps that need to be ground out. These areas will leave a mess of wood chips, and the major areas will be re-turfed. In addition, we will commence pruning and under-scrubbing trees through the winter months. This will target areas where we need to encourage airflow and light for turf growth. At times, there may be debris on the ground, but we will do our best to manage golfers around these areas.

Tees - 4th & 9th

As previously mentioned, our tees have had a minor setback due to an army grub infestation. The 9th tee has recovered far better than the 4th, mainly due to the extra sunlight. The cutting height of the turf is continually being reduced as part of a plan to have these areas back in play in the coming weeks. Our volunteers are now completing the Geo-hex cart paths around both tees, and once they are complete, it will be great. Thanks Volunteers!

Ladies President Update

club image

The ‘Sink it in Pink’ Breast Cancer Day, one of the feature events for the club, has again raised substantial funds for an issue that touches us all. All the ladies entered into the spirit of the day, and Delta Air Lines very generously provided two return flights to the USA. Angela Salisbury, an enthusiastic volunteer and someone whose life has been significantly impacted by the disease, won this prize. Many thanks also to Mary Conway for facilitating the Delta Airways connection. Local businesses dug very deep to provide the other 50 or so prizes that were raffled off, with over $14,000 being raised in total.

NSW VWGA Sponsored 2-day Tournament

The NSW VWGA Sponsored 2-day Tournament is being held on 1 and 2 May. There will be 126 visitors from 26 NSW clubs in attendance, and 16 local ladies will make up the field of 140

Both days will be a shotgun starting at 8.30 am with the format being a 4BBB on the first day and an individual stableford on the second day. We would appreciate volunteers to help with ‘spotting’ on both days. If you are available to help, please contact Pam Townsend, VWGA Delegate, on 0419467766 or johnpam6@bigpond.com

We will be providing a morning tea on both days.  If you can help, food donations will be required by 7 am on each of these days just outside the Pro Shop, as the registration process starts at 7.30 am.  If you'd prefer, food can be dropped off the day before and placed in the fridge in the storage room next to the lift.  Please bring the food in disposable containers to help with the cleanup afterwards.

All queries to Pat Hawkins (0447 581 715) or Nicky Bethwaite (0414 901 309).

Ladies Captain Update

The draw is out for the Ovarian Cancer Day on MiTournament. It will be a small field, so get in early. It should be a fun day.

The Bronze Pennant team has finished their season. Well done to all the new and old players.

The next medal round on 29 April will be Stableford for just the C Grade to see if we can get bigger fields. Also, it is the Women's Goodwill Plate Golf NSW. It will be a $2 per person donation charity chosen by the HNLGA  to be paid at the Pro Shop; the winning score will be sent to the District.

Time to get your partners for the mixed and ladies' foursomes that are coming up.

Gail Murray - Ladies Captain

NBGC VETS

From April, we will explore some ideas that should assist with some "Slow Play" issues. Our members' average age is 78, so jogging between shots will not be mandatory! But starting groups of 4 players in motorised carts at the start of the field will be an option worth trialling.

From a recent survey, our members are seeking a wider variety of competitions, including team events. This will see an expansion to our regular Stableford and odd Stroke competitions. Other events such as Ambrose 4-person, Ambrose 2-person, 4-ball stableford (best score), 4-Ball Aggregate stableford (combined scores), Canadian Foursomes, American Foursomes, and even the dreaded Par Event will be considered.

We are attempting to organise a mixed Ambrose 9-hole event with the Monday morning ladies on Monday, 19 April 2025. I am told these annual mixed Ambrose events were very popular and much enjoyed, before COVID came along uninvited.

New members and visitors are welcome to make enquiries with our committee members - contact details are listed at nbvets.org/Home/About
