Course Updates

Course Fertiliser

Last week, our golf course tees and fairways received their final fertiliser application before winter. This was done in three applications, consisting of 4 tonnes of magnesium, 8 tonnes of lime, and 8 tonnes of organic fertilisers (this is the odour that golfers may have noticed last week).

4th & 9th Tees

Our newly laid turf on the 4th and 9th tees has suffered a minor setback due to an infestation of army grubs. The turf was laid, and over the next weekend, the larvae hatched into grubs and proceeded to eat the turf. These areas have since been treated, and new turf is now shooting through. This is a minor setback, and we expect a full recovery.

Greens - Treating of Summer Grass

Golfers will notice some of the turf on our greens 'yellowing' off. This is due to a herbicide treatment of couch and other summer grasses in the bent greens. A second application of this herbicide will take place in approximately two weeks, and while the greens appear to be 'bleached,' this is normal practice. Recovery and growth of the bent grass will continue through the cooler months.

Junior Golf News

With Term 1 drawing to a close, our juniors made the best of the nice weather throughout March.

Our MyGolf programs, delivered by our coaching staff, saw around 40 juniors participate weekly in golf activities. Our Junior Girls Scholarship Program, a partnership between The Club, Tuesday Volunteers members' group, and the Australian Golf Foundation, offers junior membership, golf tuition, and a uniform to five junior girls. The Coaching Team—Warren, Lachlan, and Duard—delivers weekly MyGolf clinics on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We commenced a school engagement program this term, delivering golf tuition clinics to St Philip's Christian School year 7 and 8 students.

Another new introduction this term is our Sunday Junior 9-hole competitions. We have a regular group of juniors participating in the competition, with up-and-coming new junior cadets playing to obtain a handicap. It is encouraging to see so many young people introduced to the game and to the Club.

Holiday Junior Golf Program - Limited spots are available, so don't miss out!

Belmont Classic

Eleven of our juniors participated in the Belmont Junior Classic on 2 March. Our Juniors proudly represented the Nelson Bay Golf Club.

Our junior members played some wonderful golf. Harper Southall won the girls' 18-hole stableford competition, and Dylan Jones finished third overall.

US College Win

Former Nelson Bay Junior & Club Championship winner Connor Benjamin, aged 24, has won a college event in America, the Findlay Springs Invitational, with a 3-round total of -18 under. The next best competitor was -8 under Par.

Connor was a junior at NBGC in 2010 for 10 years, a product of our Junior Program during that time, and one of the best juniors in the Hunter Area.

He was a recipient of the Brian & Warren Diemar scholarship & also won the Nelson Bay Club Championship before accepting a scholarship in the US.

He is now playing for the University of Missouri in Kansas.

Connor's family lived in Nelson Bay for over 10 years and was a part of the NBGC community. His father, Lyle Benjamin, has kindly sent a message about his achievement and was very appreciative of the club for his development, sending these kind words:

Connor got his first collegiate win. Big day. Thanks to you guys for all the help. Cheers

His junior coach, Warren, felt privileged to have been a part of Connor's coaching and development and was extremely proud of his victory. On behalf of the Junior Program at NBGC, we wish him every success in the future.

Local Rules

Pathways, can I get relief from these tracks or not?

12. All artificially surfaced paths & roads are abnormal course conditions (local rule, back of the scorecard)

Let's define what is NOT considered "artificially surfaced". Previously laid red soil, next to the 8th tee box. Cart, or vehicle tracks/run-offs from hex pathways, including course maintenance tracks.

How do I treat Abnormal Course Conditions? In short, identify the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole, and drop within one club length. Refer to Rule 16 for full details.

Rule 16, Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions
